Inter Milan have identified Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini as a potential replacement for Alessandro Bastoni, as per La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Bastoni’s future has been plunged into doubt after reportedly not accepting the contract offer, with his current deal running out in 2024.

Having reached an agreement over the extensions of Stefan de Vrij and Hakan Calhanoglu, Inter have made a new deal for Bastoni a priority.

However, a sticking point has emerged as the Italian centre-back is holding out for an improved salary worth €6 million while the Nerazzurri have tabled around €4.5m.

The Nerazzurri are determined to proceed with the talks and find a solution, while Bastoni continues to attract interest from Manchester City and Chelsea.

Inter are also weighing up alternative options if Bastoni seeks an exit from the San Siro this summer.

Scalvini is at the top of their wishlist, but Inter face tough competition from European heavyweights for his signature following his incredible breakout campaign.

The 19-year-old announced himself as one of the hottest properties in Europe with a terrific season at Atalanta, becoming a regular under Gian Piero Gasperini.

Scalvini is cited as one of the exciting prospects for the Italian national team in the future, having already earned four caps.

La Dea have set an asking price of €40m, and Inter are ready to pay out as they believe they can reinvest part of the amount from Bastoni’s transfer.

The Nerazzurri are also keen on adding another centre-back to their ranks to replace Milan Skriniar, who is heading to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer this summer.

Inter see Scalvini’s Atalanta teammate Merih Demiral as a potential target.

The Turkish centre-back has revived himself and grown into one of the best defenders in Serie A this season.
