Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi makes no secret of the fact that the team are disappointed with how things went against Sampdoria in their goalless Serie A draw.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, via FCInterNews, the 46-year-old also spoke about the rapidly-approaching return to Champions League action in next week’s round of sixteen first leg tie against Porto.

Inter will have been hoping that they could build on the momentum of last weekend’s derby win over AC Milan by beating Sampdoria to make it three league wins in a row.

Instead, the Nerazzurri had to settle for a point as they could not break down a resolute Blucerchiati defnese.

Inzaghi admits that he feels disappointed that the team could not take more out of the match, noting that “We’re disappointed, we wanted a different result.”

“We didn’t underestimate this match,” he was also keen to stress, “we did well in the first half and then less so in the first part of the second.”

“We had to finish better because we created a lot against a team who were giving absolutely everything,” the coach added.

Asked if the priorities for the season are starting to change, Inzaghi replied that “I said before the match that we must not look ahead or behind us in the table, but only focus on ourselves.”

“We came into this off the back of some excellent performances, today we wanted a different result,” he continued.

“There’s a lot of bitterness, as there should be,” the coach said.

Of striker Romelu Lukaku’s continued improvements, Inzaghi said that “He’s working hard in training, and getting better with each day.”

“He needs time on the pitch and playing time, and then Lautaro and Dzeko are also doing brilliantly.”

“He got off to a good start,” Inzaghi said of the Belgian, “he helped us get up the pitch and he could have scored.”

The coach continued that “He started to drop off in the second half – initially I thought about having him, Dzeko and Lautaro, but Samp hit us on the break a few times as we started to get stretched.”

“It’s normal to have some regret after a match like this, because the players approached the match in the right way.”

“We also had chances from Acerbi and Dimarco, we had to be more clinical,” the coach lamented.

Of what appeared to be a moment of tension between striker Lukaku and midfielder Nicolo Barella, Inzaghi said that “They had an argument in front of the bench and I noticed it immediately.”

“These are things I don’t like to see, but we talked about it at the end of the first half,” he added.

“They sat down together, and by the way, they’re always together,” the coach said.

“These things happen, although we don’t want them to,” he added. “These are matters that should stay on the pitch.”

Lastly, Inzaghi spoke about the Champions League, stating that “We’re hopeful.”

“Last season we played some big matches, this time around we followed up with worthy opponents,” he added.

“Next up we have Udinese, and then another worthy opponent who have an excellent coach,” the coach concluded. “We’ll play our cards.”
