Inter got a 5-0 win over Hellas Verona this evening to return to Serie A from the international break in emphatic style and go top of the league table for the next few hours at least.

It was a surprising match in many respects.

Not least for the fact that Joaquin Correa got his fist start of the season for the Nerazzurri.

The Argentine had been expected by many to leave Inter during the summer transfer window. However, he stuck around. And he has featured a few times from the bench this season.

However, this afternoon, it was more than just a cameo from Correa.

And the 30-year-old made the most of his chance in the Inter starting eleven. Correa scored Inter’s opener and also made two assists.

The Argentine former Lazio forward set up his strike partner Marcus Thuram, and then defender Yann Bisseck.

Inter Coach Simone Inzaghi: “I Never Had Any Doubts About Joaquin Correa”

Inter coach Inzaghi said of Correa that “I know him well.” The coach has worked with Correa not just at Inter but also at Lazio.

“He’s been doing very well in training since July 13th,” Inzaghi said of Correa.

“We know there are a lot of players in the squad. And a lot of competition for places.”

“But I’d already been thinking about playing him against Roma after the other international break,” Inzaghi noted.

“And this time I had no doubts.”

Inzaghi said that “I had to choose who’d play alongside him.”

“I would’ve brought Lautaro off the bench, except for him having the flu,” Inter coach Inzaghi noted.

“He would have been able to give us a hand at the end of the match,” the Inter coach said of his captain, who was absent with illness.

“I had to choose between Thuram and Arnautovic” to start alongside Correa, Inzaghi said.

“I’m very happy for [Correa] and for the performance the guys put in. We had 48 hours to prepare for it and we had a great match.”
