Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi expects Stefan de Vrij and Matteo Darmian could be unavailable against Como tomorrow.
The Nerazzurri coach gave an update on the team’s injury crisis in defense in a press conference, as reported by FCInterNews.
Inter coach Inzaghi has already had a couple big defensive injuries to work around in recent weeks.
Both Benjamin Pavard and Francesco Acerbi have been on the sidelines since November.
However, things have gotten quite a bit worse for the Nerazzurri.
Stefan de Vrij has also picked up an injury. The Dutchman pulled out of training today, although the severity of his issue remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Inzaghi has also confirmed that the versatile Matteo Darmian has also suffered a problem.
Therefore, the pair’s availability for tomorrow’s Serie A clash with Como is in major doubt.
Both de Vrij and Darmian have started matches in defense for Inter in the last couple weeks. Therefore, Inzaghi finds himself running out of options.
Inter coach Inzaghi made clear that “Pavard and Acerbi are still out.”
“And today, both de Vrij and Darmian had some issues,” he went on. “Tomorrow morning we’ll evaluate with the medical staff whether they can come back.”
“No today, though,” the Inter coach said.
“There’s some hope, though, even if we have to ask for some sacrifices. Particularly from Bisseck and Bastoni.”
“But we’re without four defenders,” Inzaghi tomorrow.
“If we can’t get them back, we’ll evaluate who plays in the centre of defense and who plays on the side.”
“We’ll try to get Pavard and Acerbi back as soon as possible,” the Nerazzurri coach made clear.
Inzaghi noted that “Bisseck played very well on Thursday.” The German started in the centre of the back three against Udinese in the Coppa Italia.
“If he hadn’t picked up an injury, Darmian would start again,” he continued.
“If Darmian isn’t available, then Bastoni could play there. Palacios and Carlos Augusto can play on the left.”
“We’re evaluating it,” Inzaghi added. “There’s optimism as far as de Vrij and Darmian, but there’s 24 hours to go and maybe tomorrow the situation could change.”
Meanwhile, of facing Como Inzaghi said that “We know how tough tomorrow’s match will be.”
“Como are a great team,” the Inter coach said. “They’ve shown great organization and a mix of youth and experience.”
“Fabregas is proving his quality in Serie A,” Inzaghi said.
“It will be a very tricky match.”
Meanwhile, the Inter coach was also confident that he will keep the squad together during the January transfer window.
“To date, no one wants to leave,” Inzaghi made clear with the transfer window just around the corner.
“I know that Marotta, Ausilio, and Baccin are looking at the market,” the Inter coach added.
“But at the moment the thing that matters most to me is tomorrow’s match,” he said. “And ending the year well.”
“The hope is that we can get back the players, with injuries currently limiting the squad rotation.”
Of the growth he expects in 2025, Inzaghi said that “We always work to improve.”
“We see how difficult the title race is, with a lot of teams competing,” the Nerazzurri coach went on.
Inzaghi insisted that “We need another step.”
“This year there are 3-4 teams in the title race with us. So it will be a great battle, and we’ll need even more growth.”
Then, Inzaghi gave an update on the fitness of midfielder Nicolo Barella.
“He trained well yesterday and today,” the Inter coach said of Barella. “I’ll make my assessments.”
“We just finished training twenty minutes. I’ll look at the data, but I think he’s doing as well as his teammates, who showed where they’re at against Udinese.”
“I’ll decide tomorrow,” Inzaghi said of Barella’s fitness. “But he’s available.”
And of the January transfer window and potential reinforcements, Inzaghi said “We’ll discuss it.”
“But at the moment, we haven’t talked about about the transfer market.”
“I don’t rule out the idea of playing the youngsters,” Inzaghi made clear. “Then if there are players who come in who are older and have quality like in recent years, that’s good too.”
“If the youngsters have quality, though, I accept them.”
