Inter Milan are heading in the right direction in their talks to extend the contract of Stefan de Vrij, according to Tuttosport.

The Dutch defender’s future has been plunged into doubt, with his current deal at San Siro expiring in the summer.

Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Tottenham Hotspur are some of the clubs keeping tabs on his situation, but it looks like Inter will keep him.

The report also adds that the Nerazzurri have tabled a two-year extension offer with an option for a further year at his current wages.

With Milan Skriniar joining Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, Inter want De Vrij as their new defensive leader.

The 31-year-old has been plying his trade with the Nerazzurri since 2018 and was part of the squad that lifted the Scudetto in the 2020/21 season.

The Netherlands international has experienced a drop in playing time this season, with Simone Inzaghi often rotating him with Franco Acerbi.

Acerbi, currently on loan from Lazio, is also in line for a permanent deal, with his loan spell expiring in the summer.

De Vrij returned to the starting eleven in the goalless draw against Sampdoria. He will hope to keep his place against Udinese and the upcoming Champions League round of 16 game against Porto.

Inter are working on the contract extensions of a handful of first-team stars, including Hakan Calhanoglu, Edin Dzeko and Alessandro Bastoni.

Inzaghi’s side are second in Serie A, 15 points adrift of leaders Napoli.
