Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta will have freedom to operate in the transfer market under the ownership of Oaktree Capital.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper note that the Nerazzurri will still be obliged to sell players in order to fund signings.

Veteran former Juventus and Sampdoria executive Marotta has been the architect of Inter’s transfer strategy since 2018.

The 67-year-old has been a particularly important figure for the Nerazzurri since the start of the pandemic.

The financial problems that emerged at the club in the wake of the pandemic have necessitated taking advantage of free transfer opportunities, and other low-cost signings.

And Marotta is perhaps more adept at spotting these opportunities than any other executive in European football.

It was outgoing Inter owners Suning who brought Marotta to the club.

The arrival of Oaktree to take the place of the Chinese company may have raised some doubt about whether anything would change in terms of Marotta’s status.

But Tuttosport report that the CEO will remain as important as ever. Moreover, he will largely have final say over transfers – Oaktree are going to be fairly hands-off.

Marotta and Inter Sporting Director Piero Ausilio and Assistant Sporting Director Dario Baccin had already been starting the process of developing the club’s strategy for this summer.

And according to Tuttosport, there will be little interference from Oaktree in this respect.

The newspaper report that the new owners respect the work that Marotta and his cohorts have done already. And they have faith in the plan for this summer.

The first order of business will be to sign a goalkeeper.

Athletico Paranaense’s Bento is the top target in this respect.

And just behind the Brazilian  would be Genoa and former RB Leipzig keeper Josep Martinez, according to Tuttosport.

Then, there will be the question of sorting out the future of wingback Denzel Dumfries.

If the 28-year-old does not sign an extension to his contract – which currently runs out at the end of next June – then Inter will aim to sell him this summer, cashing in while they have the chance.

And Marotta has already been considering the possibility of who could replace Dumfries.

According to Tuttosport, AZ Alkmaar and Japan wingback Yukinari Sugawara is Marotta’s top target to replace the Dutchman.
