Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez has been named as his team’s outstanding performer against Udinese.
Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, name the Argentine as the man of the match for the 3-2 Serie A win. They also single out wingback Federico Dimarco for praise.
Prior to yesterday evening, Inter captain Martinez had yet to score a goal.
This was certainly a worry for the Nerazzurri. And also a surprise, even with some fitness concerns due to the Copa America over the summer and the subsequent lack of a proper preseason for Martinez.
But there has always been a sense that Martinez just needed the goal.
The Argentine has occasionally gone through goal droughts at Inter. And once he has snapped them, he has invariably gotten back to his prolific best.
Martinez certainly showed how important breaking his duck was against Udinese yesterday.
The 27-year-old’s first goal of the season was not one of his best by any means.
But it was a memorable one for Martinez, who was rewarded for his application by finally getting his name on the scoresheet.
And that seemed to flip a switch for Martinez.
The Inter captain, who had struggled at times in the first half up against Udinese defender Jaka Bijol began the second period looking far sharper and quicker.
Martinez immediately scored his second, and Inter’s third.
Unlike the 27-year-old’s first goal, it was a vintage strike from Martinez. He timed his run well and beat Udinese keeper Maduka Okoye with pace and power on his shot.
The Corriere also praise Inter wingback Federico Dimarco for his performance.
The Italian international was a regular source of dangerous deliveries into the Udinese penalty area.
Dimarco’s cross was vital in Martinez getting his first goal.
