Inter and Milan’s plans to knock down San Siro and build a new stadium were dealt a heavy blow today by city mayor Beppe Sala.

The clubs are expected to declare their intentions in an official planning application they will submit to the council in the coming days.

However, Sala told reporters in Lausanne he does not want to touch San Siro until the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

“San Siro belongs to the council,” he reminded everyone in a press conference.

“If Milan and Inter want to build a new stadium in its place I can only say two things: it will take time and we own the stadium.”

Milan and Cortino d’Ampezzo today won the rights to stage the 2026 Winter Olympics and San Siro will host the opening ceremony.

Sala confirmed their successful bid included a commitment to keep the stadium intact until after the games.

“We’ll decide the fate of the stadium after that date,” he added.
