Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella recognised the importance of securing a point against Napoli after a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona yesterday.

The Italian international returned to the starting line-up after serving a suspension and helped his team to a point, with a Christian Eriksen strike salvaging the draw following Samir Handanovic’s own goal.

In an interview with InterTV after the match, Barella admitted that whilst he had hoped to help Inter earn a 12th consecutive win, the draw offered an invaluable point at this stage of the season.

“It’s important. We wanted to do more, but it’s an important point, as are all the points from now to the end of the season and we must keep this in mind. It was a hard-fought point,” the former Cagliari midfielder admitted.

“They are a great team with a lot of quality and they play good football, but when we entered the pitch we showed that we know how to play football too. It was a good match.”

Inter are now nine points clear of AC Milan at the top of the Serie A table with seven games remaining, and need a maximum of 12 points to guarantee the title, with Barella satisfied to move a step closer.

“All the points are important for the final objective and we will take them. We stick to that and we will try to win the matches from here on out,” the Sardinian concluded.

Barella has made 30 league appearances for Inter this season, scoring three goals and providing a further six assists.
