Inter Miami striker Gonzalo Higuain has insisted no decision has been made on his future despite widespread speculation that he'll retire at the end of the 2022 season.

On Monday, Higuain's father, Jorge, gave an interview to TNT Sports in Argentina stating he would call it a day after this season.

"I don't see him returning to Argentina, because of what he told me that he is going to retire from football at the end of this year. This year ends and he retires from the sport," Jorge said.

But speaking to reporters following a training session on Tuesday, Higuain sought to clarify the situation, insiting no decision has been made on his future and that his father 'misspoke'.

"It was a misunderstanding he had with me," Higuain said. "I never told him I was retiring. He misspoke, and that can happen, but this is very far from reality. I am focused on my club, on fulfilling my contract and when the time comes, if that decision is made, I will be the one communicating it, only me."

At 34 years old, even Higuain himself has conceded that he sees retirement looming on the horizon. But the former Argentina international - who has 15 goals and nine assists to his name in 44 Inter Miami appearances - says he's focused on seeing out his contract in Florida.

"Obviously, I’m close to that time in which I’ll stop playing football, but that’s not on my mind at the moment," Higuain said. "What’s on my mind is fulfilling my contract and then I will analyze how I feel and I will sit down with the club to make the best decision. Right now I feel good and I just wanted to clarify this, and when the time comes it will be me that communicates my decision.”

The striker added: “When the moment comes, I will be the first person to communicate it, the first one to say it. But at this moment my focus is on this club and fulfilling my contract.”

For the present, Higuain must focus on finding some form to help lift Inter Miami off the bottom of the overall standings. Phil Neville is under pressure after starting the season with just one point from five games and it doesn't get any easier as Miami host Supporters' Shield champions New England Revolution on Saturday.
