Mauro Icardi is a prima donna who is being negatively influenced by people who don’t understand football, according to one of Inter’s former defenders.

Tarcisio Burgnich won four Serie A titles with the Nerazzurri in the 1960s and 1970s and attacked the club’s ex-captain in an interview yesterday.

Icardi is training alone at Appiano Gentile this week after being excluded from Antonio Conte’s squad for his preseason tour in Asia.

“Inter need to make Icardi realise he is just one of their players like all the others,” Burgnich told TuttoMercatoWeb.

“His imminent departure is partly his own making. He’s been influenced by the people he has around him, who don’t understand what football is like.”

Burgnich also gave a lukewarm verdict on Inter’s new owners Suning, lamenting the demise of homegrown owners such as Massimo Moratti.

“Unfortunately, despite having all the best intentions, when someone comes over from China and buys a club I don’t think they arrive with the intention to waste money,” the former Italy international added.

“It’s true that they’ve spent some money but they’re only good players. None of them are Diego Maradona.

“Inter don’t have the player with the quality to take them up a level. Sadly we don’t have owners like Moratti anymore who would invest the money to create great teams.”
