Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that ultimately with the situation between Nerazzurri goalkeeper Andre Onana and Cameroon coach Rigobert Song, the coach’s decision has to be respected.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Il Giornale in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, Bergomi emphasized that the team and the coach have to come before individual players in situations of this nature.

Onana’s fall-out with Song and subsequent withdrawal from the Cameroonian squad at the World Cup in Qatar and temporary suspension by the country’s FA were not expected.

The Nerazzurri goalkeeper had appeared to be one of his country’s key players going into the tournament, and started their opening match against Switzerland.

Reports suggest that a tactical disagreement between Onana and Song was at the heart of the problem for him.

In the view of Bergomi, it is important for the coach to have proper authority in these situations, regardless of the details involved.

“I saw Cameroon’s first match against Switzerland, where he was taking up positions in midfield to receive the ball from his teammates,” he noted of Onana.

“Not knowing the situation well, I find it hard to express an opinion but I can say that the team must always come first, in this case the national team, and then the coaching staff, and then the players.”

“I’ll reiterate, I’m not sure how it went but one must always respect the coach’s decisions.”

“The same would apply for a club side as well, of course,” Bergomi added.
