Inter are top of the table largely thanks to their rock-solid defence, as only Fabio Capello’s Roma in 2003-04 conceded so few goals at this stage of the season, and they have the best goal difference in Europe.
Simone Inzaghi was considered a more attack-minded coach than his predecessor Antonio Conte, yet has managed to boost both their scoring record and their defensive organisation.
Despite losing goalkeeper Andre Onana and centre-back Milan Skriniar over the summer, they have conceded only 10 goals in the opening 22 Serie A rounds.
The only side in the three points for a win era that achieved this was Capello’s Roma in the 2003-04 campaign.
Inter have the best defensive record of any club in the top five European leagues, but also the best goal difference, currently at +41.
That is thanks to scoring 51 goals, which puts them above Bayern Munich at +40.
It is the best goal difference in Serie A after 22 rounds since another Inter team had +42 in the 1960-61 campaign.
No team in Serie A this season has scored more goals than Inter’s eight after a run of at least 10 consecutive passes.
