Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana admits that he would prefer to have more consistency in his situation than having to switch back and forth with Samir Handanovic as first-choice, but he respects the coach’s decisions.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset ahead of this evening’s Champions League clash with Barcelona, the Cameroonian made clear that regardless of his personal feelings he is happy to accept Simone Inzaghi’s selection choices.

Onana is set to make his third start of the season since joining on a free transfer from Ajax during the summer transfer window.

Like the previous two, this one will also come in the Champions League, whereas captain Samir Handanovic has continued to hold down the starting spot in Serie A.

There have been questions raised about whether this situation is stable enough, but for Onana’s part, he feels that the most important thing is to accept his situation and work hard.

“The Champions League is an important competition,” he said, “it’s clear that having continuity is better for a goalkeeper, but the important thing is to respect the decisions of the coach and the hierarchy in the group.”

Of this evening’s match, the 26-year-old said that “It ‘ a unique opportunity, it’s clear that it will be important to start well.”

“I can’t say if ours is a physical or mental problem,” he continued, “right now we need results and confidence.”

“I believe that these moments happen in football as they do in life,” he added, “we must remain united, we’re a great group and we can find a way out of this.”

Of his former team the Blaugranas, he said that “They’re a top team, I’ll meet some old friends again, but the important thing remains to win as this is a very important match for us.”
