Diego Godin is convinced he can make an important contribution to Inter’s fortunes after signing a three-year deal with the club, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Nerazzurri officially announced the Uruguayan defender’s arrival yesterday, having snapped him up on a free transfer after his Atletico Madrid contract expired.

Godin suffered a few injuries in Madrid last season but the 33-year-old is confident he still has plenty to give at his new club.

“Inter have presented him as the new sheriff of Milan while in Madrid he was the pharaoh,” Gazzetta noted this morning.

“It doesn’t really matter, though, because what counts is the substance, solidity, work ethic and leadership he brings.

“The English would call him a ‘no-nonsense’ defender: no gimmicks, just hard work. And never a word out of place.”

Godin is Uruguay’s joint-leading appearance maker in the Champions League alongside Edinson Cavani, having played 59 matches in Europe’s top footballing competition.

He has also the country’s leading appearance maker in La Liga, where he picked up seven trophies with Atletico under Diego Simeone.

“Godin brings Inter experience and mental strength and he’s used to playing, and often winning, big matches,” the paper continued.

“That’s why there was widespread sadness in Madrid when he posted his first message as an Inter player yesterday. Without their sheriff they feel vulnerable.”
