Inter and Milan are moving ahead with their plans to build a new stadium, and they are hoping that the public debate on the subject progresses swiftly so that they can begin construction promptly.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri both feel that the plans are necessary to bring them up to the same standard as other top-level European football clubs, in terms of their revenues and the modernization of their infrastructure.

Antonello explained that “In an urban regeneration project, San Siro has a multifunctional district with a sporting purpose. We’re at San Siro and this aspect will also be enhanced in the new project.”

“The new facility has gone in a different direction from the original project, we as the clubs have reduced the concrete volumes by more than a third and have also more than doubled the amount of green space,” he continued.

“I’d like to remind you that this will become a restricted traffic area,” he noted, ?perhaps the largest in Milan which will provide real value not just for the clubs but also for all citizens.”

“We’ve responded to all the requests that have been submitted to us,” he said. “This is the updated version that takes into account all requests from the administration.”

Antonello continued that “The other important element is that the clubs are part of the history of the city, and consequently our intention is that the clubs continue to invest in Milan, and for Milan, not only for the fans but also for all citizens.”

“The investment is to be around €1.3 billion, and will create many jobs,” he sated. “Our goals are sporting in nature. Inter and Milan are two clubs that compete nationally and internationally.”

“But in addition to these there are also environmental, social, and sustainability objectives,” he continued. “Sustainability is fundamental in projects like these.”

“These values are reflected in the project that we are proposing,” he stated. “On the other hand, today fans ask us for a different experience compared to the one they had years ago.”

“Today they ask us for an immersive experience as opposed to simply watching the match,” he added. “The fact that there are to be extra services will allow us to get closer to the top-level European standard.”

“The area will be accessible and open, respecting the highest quality standards,” he noted. “There will be water sustainability, circulation of the roads.”

“So this is a project that will try to give the city a new area of social congregation,” Antonello noted. “The clubs want to renew this sense of belonging to the city, with an innovative and attractive project.”

Of the proposed demolition of the San Siro to make way for the new structure, the executive said that “Both clubs have had numerous successes at the San Siro throughout their history.”

“The fact that we are still here in Milan must be a point of unity between the glorious past and the future,” he added, “something that the clubs want to experience and pass on to new generations.”

“And then the memories can also be expressed on an architectural level,” he noted. “We want to listen to ideas and make them happen with the help of architects.”

“The existing San Siro will no longer be there for a simple and necessary reason, which is respecting the reduction of concrete volumes,” he added.

“Then we can reflect upon all the memories,” he added. “It’s part of our DNA because the clubs have an important link with San Siro and with the city.”

On the timeline of the new stadium project, Antonello said that “We’re currently in a feasibility study phase, it’s not yet an executive project.”

“The feasibility study is used to find an area and show the volumes that will be used,” he explained. “Then the phase of executive design will start from those constraints we find, and then from there the architectural ideas will follow.”

“We chose [design firm] Populous because we liked their architectural proposal,” he added. “Now we’re here to say that the project requires certain volumes, then we’ll take time to think about the architectural aspect during the design phase.”

Of the capacity for the new structure, Antonello stated that “Before the pandemic the average capacity was around 60,000 spectators. After the pandemic there has been greater participation. The idea is to have a stadium with 60-65,000 seats, we’re working on that.”
