Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi’s defiant remarks in yesterday’s press conference in defense of his record and ability were a calculated move rather than a sudden outburst.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who suggest that the coach knew exactly what he was doing and there was nothing spontaneous about how he sprung a surprise with his more forceful and defiant words than expected.

Inzaghi has not necessarily gotten a reputation for himself for being particularly verbally scathing when speaking to the press, especially compared to some former Nerazzurri coaches.

However, when the 46-year-old has had to be, he has dug in his heels and defended his team as well as himself from criticism.

The Nerazzurri’s four losses from nine matches before the international break has invited more pressure on Inzaghi and his team than perhaps has been experienced at any point during his reign as head coach.

The former Lazio coach’s response to this difficult period was always going to be closely-watched, and he appeared to be well aware of this as he pointedly referred to his largely positive record with both the Biancocelesti and Inter to try and refute any notion that he is unfit for his position.

For the Gazzetta, this will have been something that Inzaghi had been thinking about for a long time, certainly anticipating that he would face pointed questions, and deciding that now is the time for him to start giving equally pointed answers.
