Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi believes that the most important thing after his team’s gritty 2-1 win over Venezia in Serie A is for them to take the opportunity to rest and regain their energy.

Speaking to InterTV after the match, the coach emphasized that his team had showed their determination to turn around a difficult match and take three points, but that they will be relieved to be able to catch their breath.

In hosting Venezia, the Nerazzurri have fulfilled their last fixture before the international break, and they come off an intense run of fixtures which has seen them go to extra time twice while playing twice a week.

Despite the clash with Venezia being easier on paper than some of their recent matches and some of the matches to come, Inter won’t have taken any result for granted.

And so it proved, as Inzaghi saw his team have to claw their way back from a goal down against organized and dogged opposition, on a difficult pitch and at times showing their tiredness.

“We need to recover some mental energy,” the coach said, “we’ve used up a lot, we faced Lazio, Juventus, and Atalanta in quick succession, we went to extra time twice, and some of our players are headed to their national teams.”

“We must be at our best in the matches we have to come,” he added.

“I think the mental strength we showed is something that a team must have,” he added, “the guys did well not to break down and to stay focused.”

“We knew once we equalized that we had to keep believing until the end, and the players who came off the bench also made a big impact,” he explained.

Of his substitutions, Inzaghi said that “I’ve been saying since my first day here that the greatest strength we have is in our entire squad.”

“I’m constantly getting positive signs that the squad is headed in the right direction,” he added. “We have to keep going like this as we don’t expect our rivals to give us an inch.”

The coach noted that “[Dumfries] was good but so were Vidal, Vecino, and everyone else. We must show team spirit and all pull in the same direction.”

“On a mental level it’s incredibly difficult,” he said of playing after exhausting recent extra time wines, “we’ve depleted a lot and with the conditions with COVID we’ve never been sure that we would play until the last minute.”

“The guys remained focused, even though we could have done better on the goal we conceded,” Inzaghi concluded. “We won a very important match.”
