Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi hasn’t given up on the Serie A title after his team pushed the race with AC Milan to the final day with their victory over Cagliari.

Speaking in a press conference after the match, the coach gave his immediate reaction to the match and also explained that midfielder Nicolo Barella had been taken off to avoid tiredness at this stage of the season.

Barella came off midway through the second half of the clash at the Sardegna Arena, being replaced with Roberto Gagliardini to see the match and the three points.

Gagliardini did well, including bagging an assist for Lautaro Martinez’s second and the team’s third goal, but Barella is a key man in the centre of the pitch for the Nerazzurri and his leaving the pitch in a must-win match was surprising.

The coach explained that it was nothing more than a precaution with the 25-year-old’s fitness, stating that “Barella had played for all 120 minutes on Wednesday and covered many kilometers.”

“At that moment I wanted to bring in Gagliardini because he’s in good shape, he has height and physicality,” he added. “Calhanoglu seemed fresher to me and I opted for Barella to come off.”

Of the Scudetto race, Inzaghi emphasized that “There is a match still to play, the team believes in it. It happened to me once that I was two points behind on the last matchday [when he won the Scudetto as a player with Lazio] and so we believe in it until the very end.”

“Wednesday after the game and then Thursday we celebrated the Coppa Italia which was wonderful,” the coach said, “and then over two days the guys did well to prepare for a serious match against a team fighting against relegation.”

“I have a great team of real professionals,” he said.

Of playing after AC Milan had won their match, Inzaghi said that “It also happened in Udine. I said not to think about it and to think about ourselves, the important thing was to play our game.”

“The league is still to play for on the last time,” he said, “it’s a very exciting season. ”

Of the Rossoblu, Inzaghi said that “They played well to my eyes, but they came up against a great Inter.”

“We scored three goals and hit the post a few times,” he said, “they got a goal back and kept pushing up the pitch giving everything because they are playing for salvation, but a great Inter wanted to win and kept control until the end.”

“In the end, the points we have are what the team deserve,” he said. “We took many points, we had so many matches full of joy and two trophies which we brought home.”

“Now let’s see what happens,” Inzaghi concluded. “As for regrets, I have to be honest, there aren’t any.”
