Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his selections for this evening’s Serie A clash with Venezia are the right ones based on the match and the condition of the players at his disposal.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia ahead of the match, the 45-year-old explained that Alessandro Bastoni is being deployed in the centre of the back three because Andrea Ranocchia is not at full fitness, and also gave his rationale for the rest of his selections.

Bastoni starts in the centre of the defense having usually been deployed on the left side both this season and over the past two campaigns under Antonio Conte.

The 22-year-old is in somewhat unfamiliar territory whereas Ranocchia would have been the option who is more used to the role.

However, as the coach explained, the 33-year-old is a bit fatigued having played all ninety minutes of each of the Nerazzurri’s past two matches.

Of what he expects from the match, Inzaghi stated that “We are playing against a team in an excellent moment of form, who are doing well despite being newly promoted. We need to be careful, this will be a real test of our maturity.”

“I picked the formation that seemed most suitable to me,” he went on, “and I will make the substitutions based on the result.”

“I made some changes both in attack and defense,” the coach explained. “I will try to evaluate things from match to match. I have lots of competition in a good squad, and I will continue to make changes as I have tonight.”

Of Bastoni’s position, the coach made clear that “This is an option that we have. Ranocchia had two extraordinary match but didn’t recover in an ideal way despite doing everything he could to be available.”

“I could still put him on during the match,” he added of the defender’s fitness. “Dimarco has played this role for me in the past, and we expect to have a lot of possession, I made my decision.”
