Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team were fairly hard done-by to lose 2-1 against Roma in Serie A earlier this evening despite the fact that their goal was hardly under threat for most of the match.

Speaking to InterTV after the match, the coach lamented the manner in which the Nerazzurri had thrown away a one-goal lead even though they had appeared to be in control for the lion’s share of proceedings and the Giallorossi did not create a huge number of chances.

Inter needed a performance as much as if not more than they needed a result against Roma in order to respond to their difficulties from before the international break, and in this respect there can be few positives to take from their match this evening.

However, Inzaghi did not want to completely overlook the positive aspects of the team’s performance, and felt in fact that they would have deserved something more on the balance of play.

“The key moment was in the 35th minute, we had the lead and we were holding onto possession, we made a mistake on the break and conceded, and then for the last ten minutes of the half we gave Roma more of the pitch to work in.”

“We suffered a very damaging defeat even though we didn’t concede a shot on target, we lost 2-1,” he rued. “We have to work on the details and on the things that make the difference.”

Asked if he feels that his team are paying for mental lapses that pop up right when they seem to be playing well, Inzaghi replied “Absolutely, yes.”

“Of the first eight matches we’ve played this has certainly been the best one in terms of intensity,” he continued, “particularly factoring in the opposition as Roma are an excellent opponent.”

“We did well and could have won, and instead we’re standing here talking about a defeat in which we conceded two goals, we had to do better and we have to work on those details,” he continued.

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Barcelona, Inzaghi said that “We have a very difficult match against a very strong team, we have to do well to recover our strength and energy because we have to prepare at our best.”
