Inter could find the spark for a turning point in their season if they are to play against Barcelona this evening in the way that they did against top opposition in the Champions League last time around.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who suggest that while this evening’s match will be a massive challenge, it also represents a significant opportunity.

One of the most impressive aspects of Inter’s last season was the manner in which the team coped against the absolute best opposition in Europe.

In the group stage of the Champions League, the Nerazzurri were desperately unlucky not to get even a point against eventual winners of the competition Real.

In the first match at the San Siro in particular, a confident Inter team were on top for long spells, and only a man-of-the-match display by Thibaut Courtois and a late sucker punch from Rodrygo denied the Nerazzurri a result that they surely would have deserved.

Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri had to face Liverpool last season, on the way to the Premier League giants’ way to the final which they lost to Real.

The greater European experience of the English side was decisive as they knocked Inter out, but the Nerazzurri’s performance was an encouraging sign and impressed many pundits.

The 2-1 scoreline on aggregate was a respectable one against opposition the calibre of Liverpool, there were long spells in which Inter dictated the tempo and showcased their football, and the Nerazzurri were the one team who managed to beat the Reds at Anfield last season to boot.

Now, Inter face a similar challenge in the form of a resurgent Barcelona team, joint leaders in La Liga and among the favourites for the Champions League this season.

The Blaugranas may well be the toughest test that Inter face this season, which is all the more imposing considering that the Nerazzurri’s form has been quite poor so far in the campaign.

However, if there is a bright side to the timing of this fixture, it is that if Inter can summon up the kind of performance that they reserved for Real and Liverpool last campaign, it could be a major boost in confidence and a signal that they are ready to finally reach a turning point.
