A report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport has taken a look at the possible implications of the Milan city council’s insistence for San Siro to remain standing.
The Milanese clubs new stadium project was given the declaration of public interest by the Milan city council but this came with no less than 16 conditions attached to it – with one of those believed to relate to San Siro.
San Siro currently stands at 68 metres tall and will be reduced to around 30 during renovation work, which will cost a sum of €200-250 million at least. It also remains to be seen what purpose it will remain for with it having been suggested it could become a stadium for youth/women’s football.
The idea of a smaller stadium does not satisfy the clubs, who were looking to completely demolish it as part of their new stadium project. The clubs would far rather turn the ground San Siro is on into commercial areas.
Inter and AC Milan wish to build their new stadium in the San Siro district but if the conditions imposed on them make it impossible for them to proceed, they would then turn their attention to the Sesto San Giovanni area of the city.
