Luis Figo has sympathised with his compatriot Sergio Conceicao, suggesting the instability at AC Milan has not helped him do his job.

It seems as though Conceicao’s fate is sealed as we head into the final few games of the season. Having replaced Paulo Fonseca at the end of December, the ex-Porto boss has not been able to turn the club’s fortunes around, despite winning a trophy just two games into his tenure.

During interviews – especially post-match ones – Conceicao has underlined on several occasions how the various difficulties he has encountered since he signed for the Rossoneri should not be used as alibis.

What he usually does then is list the things that have worked against him, making it clear that he feels that there are mitigating circumstances which have made his job difficult, so much so that he has actually performed worse than his predecessor.

La Gazzetta dello Sport did an interview with Figo on the day of the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg, and he was asked about the issues that Fonseca and Conceicao have faced this season.

“And what coach doesn’t have them? I speak as an outside observer, but I think that if there is a certain instability in the club, the first person to notice it and pay for it is the coach.”
