Real Madrid are going through a bizarre injury crisis, with more than half of the starting lineup sidelined, including goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who ruptured his ACL in the preseason, ruling him out for nearly the entire campaign.
Eder Militao, too, suffered from the same injury, and will not make a return until around March 2024. Vinicius Jr is also out till early February, while Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga also picked up muscle knocks in November.
Luka Modric, Daniel Carvajal, and Jude Bellingham were the latest to enter this list, but Madrid have received a huge boost ahead of their game against Real Betis.
Modric and Bellingham were seen in training today, while Courtois, Militao, Carvajal, Tchoumaeni, Camavinga, Vinicius, and Arda Guler worked separately on their recovery.
Ancelotti also updated the press and fans about Bellingham’s recovery after the Englishman received the Golden Boy Award from Tuttosport this week.
“He trained alone because he was recovering from that problem in his ankle. He has recovered well,” he said in his pre-game press conference.
The 20-year-old played the entire 90 last weekend against Granada, while Modric was not even on the bench.
The Croatian picked up an injury against Cadiz, and was substituted off in the 70th minute for Dani Ceballos, with Madrid leading 2-0 at that moment. His injury came at an especially troubling time for Carlo Ancelotti, with Tchouameni and Camavinga already missing from midfield.
However, in their absence, Castilla star Nico Paz has stepped up to the plate and delivered some solid performances, including the winner against Napoli in the Champions League last week.
The youngster has impressed Real Madrid fans and coaches alike, and will continue to be a part of the Los Blancos first-team setup for the foreseeable future, especially with other superstars out of action.
