Norwegian international Ingrid Engen will leave Barcelona at the end of her contract, amid reported interest from the London City Lionesses and French side Lyon.
The 27-year-old will depart the Spanish club after three years, during which she made 152 appearances and won 13 trophies, including two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles and three Liga F championships.
Engen arrived from Wolfsburg as a midfielder but would go on to play in defence for the Catalan side.
The Norwegian was not in the starting XI for either of the two Champions League semi-finals against Chelsea this season. She also came off the bench during the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the final.
However, she did start in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid to win the Copa de la Reina trophy.
Her departure will alert the likes of the London City Lionesses and Lyon, who have been linked with moves for Engen.
Spanish publication AS Sport last week reported that the London City Lionesses are the ‘best-positioned team’ to sign Ingrid Engen amid her exit from Barcelona.
London City will play in the Women’s Super League for the first time next season after achieving promotion from the Championship.
The club already has established names including former Barcelona player Maria Perez, Sofia Jakobsson, and Kosovare Asllani. Jakobsson and Asllani were today confirmed to be part of Sweden’s squad for Women’s Euro 2025.
London City are by Michele Kang’s consortium, which also includes Lyon – who have also been linked with Engen.
Lyon made a move to sign Engen in January, but Barcelona were unwilling to let the Norwegian go during the winter transfer window.
The French side, unlike London City, will play Champions League football next season which could have a major say in Engen’s decision.
Ingrid Engen posted an emotional farewell message to Barcelona and the club’s fans in a post on social media.
The Norwegian defender wrote: “Dear Culers. My time at this amazing club has now come to an end. In my last game on Saturday I got to celebrate winning Copa de la Reina with all of you – a beautiful (and very emotional) ending to four incredible years in this team.”
She added: “It’s been a dream wearing this jersey and playing for this club, and I am so proud of being part of the history we have made together.
“The biggest moments will always be the ones created by, and together with, the amazing fans – despite victory or loss. Thank you for all the love and support you have shown me from day one, and I hope that you have felt the reciprocation.
“Barcelona has truly become, and will always feel like, my home. I am also incredibly lucky to have found friendships for life in this beautiful city.”
