The U.S. Open Cup quarter-finals kicked off on Tuesday with two matches. Here is what went down.
Scorer: Williams 31′, McCarthy 83′ (OG
The magic of the cup delivered at Fifth Third Bank Stadium as United Soccer League Championship side Indy Eleven stunned Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United 2-1.
Rob Valentino’s men dominated control of the game with 68 percent possession and 16 shots but couldn’t get the job done.
A slick run from Augustine Williams saw the No. 9 in acres of space, and he stabbed home the opener.
An own-goal from substitute Dax McCarthy then doubled the lead for Indy Eleven.
Elio Nicolas de Araujo Firmino rifled the ball into the net late on to turn things 2-1, but it proved too little too late for Atlanta.
Indy Elven will now face either Sporting KC or FC Dallas in their first-ever tournament semi-final.
