Charlton Athletic could be on the verge of another takeover in the near future with speculation swirling that someone is about to take the reins from Thomas Sandgaard.

Sandgaard arrived to great fanfare with him hoping to get Charlton up the divisions but ultimately the Addicks have not been able to do that, with a number of managerial changes along the way.

The owner is now open to letting the club go which is quite the quick turnaround from where he wanted to take it not so long ago, and hopefully whoever comes in will be able to provide a good foundation on which the club can build.

Indeed, there’s now a chance that Charlie Methven and a consortium arrive, with Football Insider saying that the ex-Sunderland man is looking to get involved with another football club.

It’ll certainly be another interesting change to keep an eye on if it does happen, and so we asked FLW’s Charlton fan pundit Ben Fleming for his views on the potential takeover.

Here’s what he had to say…

“The links with Charlie Methven seem pretty concerning. When you look at the fee that has been touted it seems an incredibly small amount.

“If you read what a lot of Sunderland fans have said in terms of selling assets and youth players and the relationship with their fan base that is also very concerning, it all adds up to something that is not in the interest of Charlton fans and on-pitch performance.

“Incredibly concerning but hopefully some sort of EFL due diligence stops this or ensures there’s financial backing and a long-term plan in place.”

The Verdict

Ultimately any takeover of Charlton is met with concern by supporters given the rotten luck they have had with owners over the years.

Sunderland fans’ endorsements of Methven are not particularly positive, either, so you can understand Ben’s standpoint.

Ultimately, if Methven and co. do take charge it is up to them to assure Charlton fans that the club is going to be looked after, and we’ll just have to wait and see if that is what transpires should a sale go through.
