Iñaki Williams recently made his debut for Ghana against Brazil. In an interview with Diario AS, he talks about the process of making a decision that honours his origins, his younger brother Nico, and going to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

On Ghana debut against Brazil

I am very happy, content and proud to fulfill a dream, the dream of my whole family, especially my grandparents, who helped me to make the decision I have made. I’m proud and I’m looking forward to playing again and to scoring a goal.

What is your first World Cup memory?

A goal by Ronaldo in the final against Germany in 2002, with that peculiar haircut, shaved and with a fringe. I have many others from Ghana, the one in the 2010 quarter-final when Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty against Uruguay. I was very sad because I was very connected to Ghana in that World Cup.

Very few people can play in a World Cup. If the coach calls me up, it will be a dream come true.

It’s incredible. At the end of the day, my brother is ready to be a Spain player. He’s showing that he’s making progress, he’s gaining experience. He’s improving a lot in front of goal and the truth is, if I were Luis Enrique, I would also call Nico up. He’s a talent, a diamond in the rough that needs to be polished. He has a lot of room for improvement and hopefully, he can continue to improve.
