Barcelona had to work hard for their narrow 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano at Estadi Montjuic, with Hansi Flick repeatedly praising the opposition’s performance after the game.
It was indeed a tough game for the Catalans, who were unable to make too many scoring opportunities. But even against this tough Vallecano side, one player who made a noticeable impact was Alejandro Balde.
Starting in his usual left-back role, Balde was a live wire for Barcelona throughout the course of the game.
The Spaniard utilised his speed and acceleration to make marauding runs on the flank, thus making life difficult for the Rayo Vallecano defensive line, which was already occupied by Barcelona forwards.
Balde may not have registered an assist, but he came very close on two occasions. In the 19th minute, he delivered a perfectly timed low cross to Raphinha.

However, the Brazilian winger failed to control the ball, and his shot missed the target. Later, in the 70th minute, Balde found Dani Olmo inside the box, only for Augusto Batalla to make a crucial interception.
Balde’s influential performance on the night is backed by statistics as well. He completed four successful dribbles, the highest in the game.
His passing in the final third was also impressive, with 13 completed passes in the attacking zone – the most by any Barcelona player.
In terms of goal-scoring opportunities, Balde was responsible for creating two big chances, ranking only behind Rayo Vallecano’s Isi Palazon, who had three.
Overall, Balde’s speed and dribbling prowess on the flank, coupled with his darting crosses from wider areas played a key role in helping Barcelona secure a narrow win.
Thanks to the three points, the Catalans have now reclaimed their position as table toppers, though the club would once again require Balde’s performances when they take on Las Palmas in their next league game.
