Diogo Jota has been cruelly stopped amid sensational recent form at Liverpool by an injury to his knee, but early reports suggest the forward hopes to play again this season.

Jota suffered the damage when Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard landed on his leg after the pair tussled for possession on Saturday. Liverpool cruised to a 4-1 victory in London, but the mood around the club was bittersweet after Jota was forced off moments before half time.

Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the injury appeared serious, and Jota has already undergone initial scans. However, according to reports in both Portugal and England the forward has not suffered a cruciate ligament injury and therefore should only miss two months of action.

Jota was unfortunate to miss out on Portugal’s World Cup in Qatar ’22 through injury and there were inevitably fears that his place at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer was under threat. Such worries have been calmed by reports which claim the former Porto man is hoping to return for the final weeks of Liverpool’s season.

Jota has been outstanding for the Premier League leaders in recent weeks, finding the net five times in six appearances coming into the weekend. The Premier League recognised Jota’s contribution on Friday by naming him Player of the Month for January.
