In-form Liverpool midfielder picks up injury on international duty | OneFootball

Alexis Mac Allister has given Liverpool cause for concern after picking up an adductor injury while on international duty with Argentina.

The 25-year-old has started all three of the Reds' Premier League games in 2024/25, playing a starring role alongside Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch to help new head coach Arne Slot to a perfect start.

Mac Allister was particularly impressive in the 3-0 win over rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford, playing a crucial role for the third goal after stealing the ball away from Kobbie Mainoo in midfield. Liverpool went on to feed the ball to Mohamed Salah, who put the game out of sight to extend his incredible goalscoring record at United.

The international break perhaps came at an unwelcome time for Slot and his side, given their momentum, and the sight of Mac Allister going off injured during Argentine's World Cup qualifying win over Chile – a match he also scored in – will have been an obvious cause for concern.

Argentine publication TYC Sports state that Mac Allister is suffering with discomfort in his adductor muscle, with his training regime altered to give him an outside chance of featuring against Colombia on Tuesday.

It's unclear whether or not Mac Allister will be risked at this stage, but given the game is another World Cup qualifier for Argentina, manager Lionel Scaloni may opt to play the former Brighton & Hove Albion playmaker to give his team the best chance of winning.

Liverpool's next Premier League game is against Nottingham Forest, who have also made an unbeaten start to the season but have won just one of their three games.

Attention then turns towards the reformatted UEFA Champions League for the first time, with Liverpool's league phase campaign kicking off with a tricky-looking game away at Italian giants AC Milan.

Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Xabi Alonso-managed Bayer Leverkusen are also on the menu in the upcoming weeks and months, in what should be a real test of Liverpool's progress under Slot.
