Lazio players Alessio Romagnoli and Ciro Immobile took to social media to deny arguments with President Claudio Lotito and ex-coach Maurizio Sarri.

The club is in turmoil after Sarri tended his resignation on Tuesday afternoon, following four consecutive defeats in all competition, including the Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

was leaked to the media almost immediately and speculation has been rife about which players were not fully behind him.

Immobile was criticised and hit back on Instagram, giving his side of the story.

“Hello to everyone, a lot has been said and written, but it is only right for me to confirm certain things. I have always been at the disposal of coach Sarri, just like I was previously for every other coach in my career.

“Yesterday, along with all my teammates, we tried to change his mind about handing in the resignation. In the evening, we discussed it with the club, but the coach’s decision seemed immediately irrevocable for personal reasons, as confirmed by the President and director of sport.

“I never lacked effort, nor did any of my teammates, never showed a lack of love or support, and I certainly wouldn’t do so at this moment.

“There is a campaign to denigrate me and other members of the squad. I am disappointed to be dragged into this, but I will not accept being used for other means.

“It is well known in football that ingratitude is just the love of the day before! Always Forza Lazio!”

Romagnoli also went on Instagram Stories to respond after reports emerged that he had a heated argument with President Lotito in the locker room following the 2-1 home defeat to Udinese.

“On Monday evening, after the game with Udinese, I had a meeting with President Lotito and we had a confrontation, as often happens after a match.

“I was surprised today to read in a newspaper some things in quotation marks that were supposedly said by me. The tenor of the dialogue between me and the President was very different to the heightened tension described by a report that does not correspond to reality.

“I always focused on what was best for Lazio, and even more so in a moment like this. Forza Lazio!”

Il Messaggero newspaper had claimed that Romagnoli rejected Lotito’s order for the team to go into a training retreat.

“I won’t go. You can sell me if you want. After all, you didn’t give me a thousand other things that you promised.”
