18-year-old Derby County defender Dylan Williams was handed his first Championship start against West Bromwich Albion yesterday and has left many Rams supporters excited after helping Wayne Rooney’s side claim a point.
Travelling to take on league leaders West Brom at the Hawthorns was never likely to be easy for Derby but they produced a defiant defensive display and kept wave after wave of attacks out to ensure the points were shared.
Albion were in the ascendancy throughout, as their 25 shots and nine on target illustrate, but ultimately the Rams did enough to frustrate Valerien Ismael’s side all evening.
Rooney has preferred a back four for the majority of the campaign but opted for a back five against the Baggies, with Lee Buchanan slotting in at left centre-back and Williams ahead of him at wing-back.
The teenager worked tirelessly throughout and though his quality in possession left a little to be desired, defensively he certainly played his part.

As well as winning four of his five ground duels, Williams made two interceptions, two tackles, and one clearance, and blocked one shot (Sofascore).
The East Midlands club’s threadbare squad means that Rooney is going to have to rely on young players stepping up this season and the defender did just that in his first Championship start yesterday, much to the excitement of many Rams fans…
