Liverpool’s Summer Plans: Defender Set for Summer Exit According to Recent Social Media Post

With Jurgen Klopp’s departure and Arne Slot’s announcement now done, it’s time for Liverpool to start looking ahead to the summer transfer window. That’s in terms of both incomings and outgoings and their appears to be a breakthrough on the latter of those developments.

Following Klopp’s Liverpool farewell last week, a number of past and present players have paid tribute to the Anfield icon. However, one of those social media posts have particularly caught the eye of Liverpool fans, which seemingly confirms the future of one of Liverpool’s current first-teamers.

Who is the Player in Question?

The player in question is Liverpool defender, Nathaniel Phillips, who had been linked with a permanent move away from the club or numerous years but appears to finally about to leave the club. On a recent Instagram post paying tribute to Jurgen Klopp, Phillips wrote: “Thank you Boss, for showing belief in me, and for giving me the opportunity and privilege to represent Liverpool Football Club. I’ll be forever grateful for the experiences I’ve had and the moments we have shared together.”

On the face of it, it’s a perfectly natural and fitting farewell to one of Liverpool’s modern day legends. However, when looking in the comments you will see a comment from Liverpool’s departing goalkeeping coach, John Achterberg, who wrote: “You a good defender Nat! Good luck for your next move.”

Liverpool fans appear to think this could be suggesting that Phillips could be set for a move away from the club once again this summer, after a reasonably successful loan spell at Cardiff City last season.

Phillips’ Liverpool Career

Despite only making 29 senior appearances for Liverpool since his arrival from Bolton Wanderers back in 2016, Phillips would leave the club with an impressive reputation and will remain as a fan favourite amongst the supporters.

It’s hard to forget his incredible contribution in the 2020/21 season in the midst of Liverpool’s injury crisis that saw Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all injured for the whole of the season. Phillips would step up alongside Rhys Williams to deliver the Reds a fairly impressive third place finish considering the surrounding issues at the time.

The majority of his time at Liverpool has been made up of loan spells, spending time at Stuttgart, Bournemouth, Celtic and Cardiff City.

Phillips’ Next Step

With speculation rising around the 27-year-old’s future, it’s yet to be reported where his next club could be. It’s expected that a high-end Championship club or lower-end Premier League club could make a move for the defender.

Transfermarkt currently value Phillips at around £3.5million, but I suspect Liverpool will be hoping for a fee closer to £4-5million. Either way, it’s definitely time for both parties to move on and I’d even argue that this decision should’ve been made a few years back when Phillips was valued between £8-10million.

It’ll be sad to see Phillips go, but it’s definitely the right decision, without a doubt.
