Centre-back Nat Phillips has made 15 appearances for Liverpool’s first-team this season.

Journalist Ian Doyle believes that Phillips has been strong in the air for Liverpool this season.

However, Doyle is not convinced that Phillips’ aerial prowess will be enough to secure him a long-term deal at the club. Phillips’ current contract expires during the summer of 2023.

As quoted by Anfield Watch’s Twitter account, Doyle told the Liverpool Echo: “Nat Phillips has become a cult hero – his aerial prowess gives something #LFC have lacked. But I’m not sure that’s enough to secure a long-term future at the club.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Phillips is averaging a WhoScored player rating of 7.08 across the 2020-21 campaign. The aforementioned figure highlights that the Phillips has performed well for Liverpool this season.

However, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all missed the majority of the season because of respective injuries.

Phillips has only been given an opportunity because the aforementioned players have been injured.

Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip will all be fit for the 2021-22 campaign. Therefore, it would be fair to assume that Phillips won’t be a required player at Anfield next season, especially if the club sign Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.
