Sheffield United have joined the race, alongside fellow Championship club West Brom, to sign Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, who is currently on loan at Stoke City.

That's according to Alan Nixon, who revealed that the Foxes could look to offload Cannon on a permanent basis during the upcoming January transfer window.

The Everton academy product was at the centre of attention prior to the international break, after scoring four goals during the Potters' recent 6-1 win over Portsmouth, so it is no wonder that the Blades and the Baggies, who are both vying for promotion to the Premier League, are keen on the striker's services.

Football League World's Blades fan pundit, Jimmy, who runs the Blades Ramble YouTube channel, said: "I'm a big fan of Tom Cannon, I know a lot of Blades who wanted us to be in for him, and were pleased that we were rumoured to be in for him before he signed for Stoke this season.

"I think he'd be great for our system.

"My only concern is I don't think he'd start over Kieffer Moore.

"We've obviously invested money in a permanent signing of Kieffer Moore, who's on very good money.

"He's our starting striker, and would Tom Cannon be happy to come in as a support striker, or to sit on the bench behind Kieffer Moore?

"I'm not sure he would.

"Obviously, it'd be his job to try and get in, in front of him, which I think will be a difficult job.

"I think, potentially, a loan-to-buy (deal) would be good.

"I'm not entirely sure whether Leicester would appreciate him not starting every game for us, which is part of his development, and part of possibly his price increasing, if he's to be a success in the Championship.

"So, yes, I would love to sign Tom Cannon.

"I think he would bolster our squad, as necessary, but I'm not sure, with us only playing one striker up-front currently, whether it's a realistic proposition."

Potential Cannon, Moore dilemma is a valid concern

Cannon is clearly a dangerous striker at Championship level, who helped parent club Leicester on their way to the second tier title last term, with two goals and one assist from just 13 appearances and three starts in the league.

His ability in the final third was epitomised when he produced an incredible return of four goals in one game for the Potters earlier this month, as they hammered Portsmouth.

However, as mentioned by Jimmy, the 21-year-old still appears unlikely to threaten Moore's status as the Blades' starting striker, should the South Yorkshire outfit opt to sign him in January.

Furthermore, the Wales international was only signed by the Blades on a three-year-deal back in July, which indicates that boss Chris Wilder wishes for Moore to lead the line for the foreseeable future.

However, if a permanent deal for Cannon is possible once the transfer window re-opens following the turn of the year, then the Bramall Lane side could make their swoop for the services of the Ireland international in an effort to bolster their squad options.

Whether or not the Blades can sign Cannon in January could hinge on whether the Foxes would be willing to loan their man to a club where he may not be first-choice striker, or if the 21-year-old would be willing to permanently sign for Wilder's men despite the presence of Moore.
