Coventry City involved in Wembley classic

Many expected a routine win for the Red Devils when you consider the difference between the two clubs in terms of resources and the quality of the squad.

And, that’s exactly what seemed to be happening when Bruno Fernandes put Erik ten Hag’s side three up just before the hour mark.

Yet, the Sky Blues wouldn’t give up, and they battled back thanks to goals from Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare, with a Haji Wright penalty forcing another 30 minutes.

A tight offside VAR call on Wright in the last minute of extra-time would deny Coventry arguably the best comeback in FA Cup history as Victor Torp's goal was disallowed, and they would ultimately go on to lose on penalties.

Coventry City pair Ben Sheaf and Milan van Ewijk could attract interest this summer

Even though it was a terrible way to lose, the club came out of that game with plenty of credit, with many observers surprised at the quality they had in their ranks.

Whilst that’s a positive, it will also put individuals on the radar of other clubs, and one man who is facing a very uncertain future is Callum O’Hare.

The attacking midfielder is out of contract in the summer, so clubs will be watching closely, and his impressive display against Premier League opposition will have caught the eye.

Losing O’Hare would be a blow for Coventry, as he has been a key player for the club over the years, and he continues to play an important role for Mark Robins’ side.

But, speaking to FLW, fan pundit Neil Littlewood explained that it was some of O’Hare’s teammates that he was more worried about losing given how they handled the big stage at Wembley.

I don’t think Callum will have done himself any harm on Sunday, he had a good game, even if the penalty was weak, but it’s one of them," Neil told Football League World.

I’m more concerned about Ben Sheaf and Milan van Ewijk, as I thought those two played out their skin and would’ve definitely impressed any potential suitors out there.”

The likes of Fulham, Everton and Cov's Championship rivals Southampton have been keeping tabs on O'Hare in recent months, according to a report from The Sun, and whilst he had a solid showing against United which could open himself to more interest, it may be some of his other team-mates that are on the radar too come the summer.

Coventry City’s summer plans can't just revolve around Callum O'Hare

Obviously, the situation with O’Hare is out of the clubs hands, as he is in a position where he can decide his next move, and it would be no surprise if he did move on, as Coventry’s likely failure to make the play-offs means they won’t be able to offer Premier League football.

It would be a shame if his time with the club ended with the player leaving on a free, but he does have the talent to play at a higher level, so it’s understandable if he does depart.

But, as Neil outlines, there is a lot of quality at Coventry, and the team performance on Sunday was proof that they are a side heading in the right direction, and that there are several outstanding individuals in the XI.

Sheaf and Van Ewijk deserve special mentions, but you could also include Simms, Wright and a few others, as they all played well against a side that are likely to be in Europe next season.

Crucially, Coventry now have some off-field stability, so they won’t be under any pressure to sell this summer, and whilst interest in the players is inevitable, there will be a belief that they can continue to grow and it will be about adding to the squad instead of losing the star men.
