Wigan Athletic loanee Martin Kelly has expressed his devastation after being forced off with a serious-looking injury against Blackburn Rovers, taking to Twitter.

The 32-year-old was making his debut last night following his loan switch from West Bromwich Albion, starting alongside Jack Whatmough and Omar Rekik in central defence.

Performing well at Ewood Park, he became even more of an important asset when Rekik was forced off injured during the early stages of the second half, with the experienced defender being tasked with keeping the likes of Ben Brereton Diaz and Bradley Dack at bay.

In what year were Wigan Athletic formed?

1892 1912 1932 1932

He was then forced off himself in the 75th minute and although former England international Steven Caulker came on in his place, this was a major blow for the Latics considering Rekik’s setback and the fact he was performing so well in Lancashire.

Wigan boss Shaun Maloney doesn’t believe Rekik’s injury is that bad – but is fearful for Kelly with the West Brom man due to have a scan to find out how long he’s likely to be out for.

And judging by his Twitter post, the 32-year-old isn’t exactly optimistic about his chances of returning to action in the short term after being helped off the pitch.

He stated: “I’m a broken man, devastated is an understatement.

“The boys will build on a good performance, thanks for the support and appreciation out there.”

The Verdict:

This is a big blow for the Latics because he’s an experienced head who could have been (and could still be) a real asset to them in their quest for survival between now and the end of the season.

His injury doesn’t look great though and Maloney may need to plan for life without him considering his loan deal expires at the end of the season.

You could easily see the Baggies be prepared to let him go for a nominal fee at the end of this term – but the defender’s injury situation and what league the Latics are in may determine whether they can complete a permanent move for him in the summer.

He was probably the best player on the pitch yesterday – and if he can recover quickly and put in a shift like he did yesterday on a consistent basis – that can only bode well for Maloney’s side who are in real danger of relegation.

A strong defence could be crucial to their survival hopes and thankfully they have other options – but the Albion man’s presence could make the difference.

After having his game time limited at The Hawthorns, Kelly will be very disappointed at the predicament he finds himself in.
