Now we’re not sure Real Madrid will be making contact anytime soon, though Iker Casillas has revealed he would answer should they call for him to return.
The goalkeeper, now 37, has made it clear he would be willing to return to the Bernabéu or national team set-up should Spain or Real require his services.
Having left Real for Porto in 2015 after falling out of favour at Madrid, the stopper has not started for the national side since that same year of his departure.
However, while it may not be on the cards, Casillas admits he could never turn his back on his country or first team.
“[If the national team called,] I would be delighted,” Casillas told Movistar. “Of course [I would return to Real Madrid], I can’t forget where I grew up.”
While he would never say no to Madrid, the goalkeeper, who spent 25 years at the club from youth to professional, admits he probably left at the right time.
“This has been a step in the right direction,” he said of his move to Porto.
“If I had continued at Real Madrid, I would have had a worse ending than I did.”
Casillas won five LaLiga titles and the Champions League three times and is considered one of the greatest-ever goalkeepers.
