Having been on track for a record points haul and a potential title challenge only a few months ago, Marseille’s season could not have gone off the rails in more dramatic fashion.

Igor Tudor, who in his pre-match press conference confirmed he would be leaving this summer, has ended his reign with three consecutive defeats as Les Phocéens once again fell to Ajaccio on Saturday night.

After the loss to the already-relegated Corsicans, Tudor was nowhere to be seen – the Croatian manager had sent out his assistant, Hari Vukas, to face the media. In his sole year in charge, the former defender will have led Marseille to third place – finishing eleven points off Lens – and instilled a dynamic, all-action style of play all the while alienating certain senior players.

Despite a strong run of form in the wake of their Champions League exit in the autumn, that momentum came to a swift end when the team crashed out of the Coupe de France to second-tier Annecy, despite beating PSG earlier in the competition.

The match saw various incidents off the pitch, including monkey chants from the stands and a sick child wearing a Marseille shirt attacked, along with his family, as reported by AFP.
