Peterborough United will be hoping the upcoming summer transfer window is another period where they lose key players.

Posh have built up a very good reputation in recent times for developing young talents and then moving them on at the right time for a high fee.

Ephron Mason-Clark is the latest name to be signed by the club and then sold for a significantly higher fee, as he joined Coventry City on a permanent deal but is spending the rest of the season with Peterborough.

Posh are in the midst of trying to get out of League One, and the hope will be that them being promoted to the Championship will help them keep hold of players like Ronnie Edwards for that little while longer.

The young defender has been a wanted man for some time, and it could be that no matter what Peterborough achieves this season, they will have a challenge on their hands in retaining the player.

Fulham, West Ham, and Crystal Palace’s previous interest in Ronnie Edwards

It was reported by talkSPORT very early in the January transfer window that Crystal Palace had had multiple bids rejected by Peterborough for Ronnie Edwards.

It was then claimed by TEAMtalk, that Fulham and West Ham United had also joined the race for the young defender.

The report stated that the Cottagers had sent scouts to watch Edwards in their FA Cup game against Leeds United earlier this season.

All three sides held interest in the player, but no move materialised, and therefore, Edwards has continued at Peterborough and has been a key member of their promotion push.

The 20-year-old will enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer, and with it being reported in January that Posh were looking for around £10 million, they should be looking for a little more than that now.

Obviously, in an ideal world, Peterborough would love to keep hold of Ronnie Edwards for a long period of time.

But the club is well accustomed to selling players when they are either in the final year of their contract or when they know they will bring in a decent amount of money.

It seems that Edwards could be the next in line, as he will enter the final year of his contract at the end of this season, and it doesn’t look like a new deal is on the cards.

Posh will not want him to leave, but they will know the player has enormous quality and is destined to play at the very top, so this summer is a chance for them to squeeze as much money out of whoever wants to sign him.

The defender has started all 38 league games he has been available for this season, during which time his performances have seen him named in the team of the week four times, as per Sofascore.com.

Edwards has been instrumental in defence, making 0.9 interceptions per game as well as 1.2 tackles and has recovered the ball 5.2 times, all of which have helped his side keep 11 clean sheets.

Furthermore, the 20-year-old has shown his enormous quality on the ball, with a 92% passing accuracy per game. While he has also created two big chances for his teammates, as well as collecting 0.3 key passes and one assist, per Sofascore.com.

The centre-back has been outstanding during his time at Peterborough, and they will likely send the player off with their best wishes.

But beforehand, they will want to make sure they get the best deal possible for them, and in that sense, they should be looking to get at least £15 million from whomever wants to buy him.

Edwards is destined for the top, and it will be hard for Posh to replace a player like that, so they need to maximise what they can get for the player, as they may struggle to have that type of defender in their team again.
