Peterborough United could be set to earn millions of pounds should two transfers be finalised during the January transfer window.

Former striker Ivan Toney, who has not featured in the Premier League for eight months for breaching FA betting rules, returns to action for Brentford this weekend.

Despite not playing this season, the 27-year-old has attracted interest from a number of clubs in the top flight, including Arsenal after a recent poor run in front of goal.

The Athletic have claimed that Toney is one of four targets for the Gunners, with the striker reportedly available to buy for £100 million.

Centre-back Ronnie Edwards has also attracted interest from the Premier League, with Aston Villa expressing their interest according to the Daily Mail, along with The Sun reporting that David Moyes' West Ham are also keen on the 20-year-old.

The League One club have put a £10 million price tag on the youngster, as per The Independent, showing how highly rated Edwards is.

What is Peterborough United's sell-on clause in any Ivan Toney transfer deal?

Peterborough could not keep Toney at the club in 2020 following a prolific League One season, and when Brentford came with an offer of an initial £5 million with a further £5 million worth of add-ons, chairman Darragh MacAnthony chose to accept.

United had received £2.5 million of those add-ons before Toney's England international debut earlier this year, per the Daily Mail, and that was an appearance that banked them another £1 million.

A sell-on clause though is the biggest part of the deal that was agreed, as the numbers touted for Toney's potential exit from the West London club mean Posh are set for a further windfall.

Co-owner Stewart Thompson revealed in 2021 that Posh would get 30 per cent of any fee for Toney's sale, but 30 per cent of that would go to his former club Newcastle, meaning if Brentford were to get an audacious £100 million for the attacker, then a mammoth £21 million would go to Peterborough and £9 million would head to the North East.

Ronnie Edwards' 2023/24 season

Edwards has started all 25 of Peterborough's league games this season and has become one of the Posh's most reliable players.

Across all competitions, the centre-back has made 29 appearances this term and been a vital part of their backline as well as scoring in draws against Carlisle United and Stevenage.

Since joining the club in 2020, Edwards has made 116 appearances for the club, an impressive amount of games for someone so young.

Playing this number of games at such a young age has allowed the former Barnet man to develop into a classy defender who is more than capable of playing at a higher level than League One.

According to Sofascore, Edwards has a passing accuracy of 90% this season, while he also has a 100% successful dribble rate. This shows that he is a modern-day centre-half who can play out from the back whilst also being good defensively,

Peterborough supporters know how lucky they are to have a player of Edwards' calibre in their team and will be hoping he'll be playing for the club come February, regardless of whether he's sold or not.

How much could Peterborough receive should both transfers go through in January?

Should both Toney and Edwards complete their rumoured moves, The Posh could be set for a bumper pay day that could aid their promotion hopes this season.

While Edwards would be a huge loss to their side, recieving the reported £10 million fee would allow Darren Ferguson free roam in the transfer market to find a more than adequate replacement.

If England international Toney does complete a transfer to the Emirates Stadium, Peterborough could recieve anywhere from £12 million to £21 million, depending on the fee Mikel Arteta's side chose to pay.

If both deals go through in January, or indeed in the summer, the Posh could easily be looking at around £30 million to spend on improving their squad, and their budget could also be increased should they achieve promotion to the Championship.
