In his season review, board member for sport Markus Krösche pays tribute to the Europa League success but wants a better showing on the domestic front in the future.

Markus Krösche on...

..the Europa League title: “What we achieved in the Europa League is extraordinary. The victory still hasn’t really sunk in. The boys deserved it, particularly with the way they’ve played football. Winning the trophy is a major milestone. We suffered big losses as a result of coronavirus. The victory in the Europa League obviously helps us to achieve certain targets earlier.”

..the domestic competitions: “Nevertheless, you have to say that we didn’t perform as well as we would’ve liked in the other competitions. We were knocked out far too early in the cup. In the Bundesliga we finished 11th after a patchy second half of the season, which we’re not happy with. We know we need to improve in many areas.”

..new opportunities: “As we all know, the biggest mistakes are made in success. We want to avoid that, stay true to our approach and make the most of the big chance we have. Therefore, we’re not going to do any crazy transfer deals. At the same time, I want to make it clear that we still rely on transfer fees.”

...objectives for next season: “In the Bundesliga we want to compete for the European places – fifth or sixth – and in the Champions League we want to get through the group stage, regardless of the opponents. The Super Cup has great significance for us. The fact we’re playing against Liverpool or Real is amazing for us as a club, and we’ll approach it accordingly.”

..internal cohesion: “I’ve been in the game for a few years, but I’ve never experienced such a distinct team spirit as the one here. A team where individuals subordinate, even if it means them compromising personally, is extraordinary. The level of identification with the club is very high.”
