Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has attracted the interest of Premier League duo Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That is according to journalist Alan Nixon, who states that both clubs are keeping an eye on the progression of the young goalkeeper. He also adds that Sunderland may look to cash in on Patterson should they fail to gain promotion to the Premier League this season.

The 22-year-old has become a fixed member of the Sunderland team this season and has played a crucial role in them being involved in the play-off mix.

So, as Leicester and Wolves keep an eye on Patterson, we asked some of the writers at FLW, if Sunderland should cash in on the goalkeeper this summer and if Patterson is ready for the Premier League.

Simmey Hannifin-Donaldson

No, I don’t think so.

Sunderland are a club on the up at the moment and with Patterson being 22, I don’t think there is any rush to sell.

I think they can afford to give the Championship another crack (presuming they don’t get into the play-offs and go up this season) before they should think about moving Patterson on.

Equally, If I were advising Patterson, I’d urge him to be patient and gain as much experience as possible before making the top-flight switch.

Billy Mulley

Anthony Patterson has adapted to Championship football very well, and at such a young age, I can see him going on to enjoying a successful career.

Possessing strong reflexes, confidence and composure when playing out from the back, he is a really dependable figure for the Black Cats who is only going to get better and better.

I actually think that Sunderland could and should probably be holding out for a sum higher than the £10 million that has been mentioned.

Not only would does he have an incredibly high ceiling and is gaining excellent experience in the second tier, but his contract does also not expire until the summer 0f 2026, meaning Sunderland can be in full control.

Of course, the goalkeeping market operates in a slightly different manner to the outfield market, however, Patterson could be a number one goalkeeper at several Premier League clubs in the not-so-distant future.

Anthony Patterson has been immense in the Sunderland goal since breaking into the first team.

Despite only being 22 years old, Patterson has taken on this big role in the first team and performed remarkably well over a period of time.

He is a goalkeeper that has confidence and the ability to succeed, and it would not be a surprise to see him become a Premier League goalkeeper. However, at this stage, it may just be a little too soon, and it may be best for his continued development to stay at Sunderland.

Sunderland are a team that isn’t in financial turmoil, therefore are under no pressure to sell any of their key players, Patterson being one of those.

A reported fee of £10 million doesn’t seem like much in this day and age, especially for a goalkeeper that is young and performing well at a decent level. Patterson’s contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2026, which puts Sunderland in greater control, and therefore, they should be looking for a lot more than £10 million.
