“I’d rather die knowing that we tried" - Brendan Rodgers on clash against Chelsea | OneFootball

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has reflected on the club's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea during the 2013-14 campaign.

The Reds welcomed the Blues to Anfield at the backend of April. Rodgers' side were the favourites to claim the biggest prize in England.

However, Chelsea blew the title race wide open by defeating Liverpool 2-0 back in April 2014.

Rodgers was recently asked if he would approach the game differently if he had his time again. But, going by the 49-year-old's response, he has very few regrets.

As quoted by The Empire of the Kop, he told the ‘Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast’ the following: “There was a lot of emotion in that Chelsea game, so if I was to do anything different, it would be that.

“I would’ve maybe framed the emotional side of it a little bit differently.

“But actually, the game idea, you wouldn’t do that (do anything different). You wouldn’t ask Pep Guardiola to do something totally different for that game. We went out to attack the game and for 70 minutes we played really well.

“The first half, we should’ve been up. Jose (Mourinho) had them banked up. They were deep, they were tight, we just couldn’t make the breakthrough.

“Then right on half time, we had the unfortunate slip with Stevie (Gerrard) and they score. That then makes it even harder and we’re chasing the game then. Probably that little bit of inexperience, from the team and maybe from me as well… it becomes emotional then.

“Really we could’ve drew the game and gone on and won the title.

“I’d rather die knowing that we tried to play how we played. Sit defensive and deep? You just don’t do that.

“My philosophy has been to attack. Attacking means defending well. That was the trademark of that team.

“It was just one of those things. We nearly did it.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We can see where Rodgers is coming from. However, looking back at that particular fixture, we wish Liverpool were a little more conservative.

The Reds only needed a draw to remain favourites to claim the title. But, Manchester City capitalised on Liverpool's loss to Chelsea and went on to claim the trophy by two points.

It was heartbreaking seeing Rodgers' side capitulate during the 2013-14 campaign. Every Red was convinced the players were going to deliver the title.
