If Lionel Messi is finally going to get his hands on that elusive World Cup on Sunday, the fairytale ending to his international career got off to a perfect start.
Argentina made a bright start against France at the Lusail Stadium, and midway through the first half they were given a golden chance to take the lead when Ousmane Dembélé clumsily tripped Ángel Di María in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.
Messi stepped up and coolly sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way to make it 1-0.
That goal puts Messi on six at this tournament – one ahead of Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race.
And the 35-year-old also made history by becoming the first player to score in the group stage, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final in a single edition of a World Cup.
Is this the Hollywood finale he was dreaming of?
