Rangers would be made to regret cashing in on Nathan Patterson if they allow the teenager to leave Ibrox when the transfer window reopens in January, according to journalist Stuart Hodge.

What's the latest news involving Patterson?

Patterson burst onto the scene last season, making 14 appearances as Rangers ended arch-rivals Celtic's Scottish Premiership title domination by being crowned champions for the first time in a decade.

His promise has led to interest from plenty of clubs across Europe, with Premier League sides Manchester United and Everton understood to be among his suitors.

Everton saw a bid worth £8million turned down by Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, with the Glasgow club looking to keep hold of their academy product.

Former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie has claimed the right-back will push to leave Ibrox if a sizeable bid is lodged when the transfer window reopens in January.

However, Patterson has gone on record to insist he will not allow the rumours surrounding his future to disrupt his form despite revealing the interest in his services is pleasing.

What has Stuart Hodge said about Patterson?

Hodge believes Rangers should not allow Patterson to leave Ibrox when the transfer market reopens for business.

Patterson still has just shy of three years remaining on his contract, so the Gers are in a strong negotiating position should bids be lodged.

Hodge feels the 19-year-old still has room for improvement despite a bright start to his career and Rangers should nurture Patterson further before allowing him to move onto pastures new.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: "If he can improve the defensive side of his game and continue to be impactful in the final third then Rangers have a real talent on their hands.

"Taking the early money now would probably be a regret in years to come."

How has Patterson performed so far this season?

Although Patterson is seen as an exciting talent, he has been used sporadically by Gerrard since the campaign got underway.

Patterson has regularly been an unused substitute but grabbed his first assist of the season when Rangers overcame Hibernian before the international break.

He also represented Scotland twice during the international break, taking his number of caps up to five.

But Scotland boss Steve Clarke came under fire from Rangers fans when he opted not to start Patterson in the narrow World Cup qualifying win over the Faroe Islands.

Instead, Patterson was only given seven minutes to showcase his capabilities.
