Rangers are ready to offer winger Serge Atakayi a new contract to prevent him quitting next year, Football Insider understands.

The forward, 20, signed a new deal last year but it expires at the end of the season to throw his future up into the air.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club are willing to offer the Finland youth international fresh terms.

Rangers do not want to lose the youngster, who has revealed Steven Gerrard regards him as a future first teamer, for nothing at the end of the season.

Atakayi joined Rangers in the summer of 2016 from Finnish second-tier outfit FF Jaro.

This was a year before the club sealed a more notable capture from that country through the landmark capture of Alfredo Morelos from HJK Helsinki.

Atakayi has principally played for the club’s youth sides and was in the development team that faced Wrexham at Ibrox this afternoon.

But the right-winger has played for once for the first team and is tipped to become a full Finland international.

A number of Rangers rising stars went on loan at the start of the season, including Josh McPake, Glenn Middleton and Zak Rudden but Atakayi remained at the club.

However, he had spell on loan at Finnish club SJK Seinäjoki at the end of last season.

It remains to be seen if he can agree a new deal with the Glasgow giants and, if not, an exit would appear to be inevitable.

He could stay until the end of the campaign when his contract expires or secure a move in the January transfer window.
