Rangers have begun a long-overdue summer clear-out, finally taking decisive steps to reshape a squad that has become bloated, inconsistent, and far too soft for the demands of the club. After another campaign without a league title, the board is acting with urgency to fix years of poor recruitment and misguided contract renewals.
Currently, three players are away on loan and not part of the squad moving forward—Kieran Dowell, Rabbi Matondo, and Ben Davies. All three were once seen as important contributors, but have ultimately failed to convince. Dowell never got going due to persistent injuries. Matondo showed flashes of pace and threat but lacked consistency. Davies, despite some solid spells, never truly looked like a long-term solution at centre-back.
Barry is also now gone, as we await the new manager.
This clear-out isn’t just about trimming the numbers—it’s a cultural reset. Rangers have carried too many players who aren’t physically reliable or mentally equipped to handle the pressure of playing at Ibrox. The club is now determined to end that pattern. That means saying goodbye to those who crumble when it matters, who can’t stay fit, or who simply don’t contribute enough.
The recruitment focus is shifting toward players who are durable, consistent, and hungry. No more luxury signings. No more passengers. Rangers are aiming for a leaner squad of warriors—players who will give 90 minutes every week, not 20 games a season.
There’s also a financial element to the clear-out. The wage bill has been bloated by players offering minimal return, and offloading them—whether permanently or on loan—is freeing up room for smarter, more targeted acquisitions. This is not about spending more; it’s about spending better.
The new manager, once appointed, will inherit a much more manageable group with space to build his own team. Unlike past appointments, he won’t be stuck with a dressing room full of unwanted names on long contracts. That alone marks a significant shift in how the club is operating.
Fans have waited a long time for this kind of ruthless clarity. There’s no room for sentiment. The clear-out is just the beginning—but it’s a clear sign that Rangers are finally serious about raising standards.
And that, more than any signing, is the most important change of all.
